Hot Debate: Is Digital Art Real Art?

Written by Bryan Mullennix

People might think digital art does not qualify as real art because it lacks skills of drawing and painting, it does not require fine materials and medias to present, and more importantly it gets help from digital equipment. I do not think this is the reason that disqualify the digital arts. According to my mighty photo 3 professor Albert Chong, he believes as long as the art works consists the idea came up by the artists, and then everything created from that idea should be considered as art and everything used by the artist is just a tool. Despite all the pros and cons mentioned from the article, the core concept of being art is the piece of art shows the idea of the artist, and it conveys the message precisely. The idea is obvious, critical, or widely discussed by people and society, and is originated by the artist. Then it should be art. I have a friend who is making animations, and her works are abstract in terms of style, but every time I watched her work it always makes me thinking about the real-life issues exists and affecting my life, such as racism, recycling, and government's media controls.

Then plus the advantages of digital art, it easy to create and correct, and most importantly, it cost less to make and it sustain much longer. The reason of film photography is not competitive compare to digital is that they are expensive and vulnerable.
